Abigail Hernandez, 8th Grade

Abigail Hernandez

Abigail is 13 years old and loves sports. She currently participates in cross country, track, and tennis, which she states is her favorite. Last year Abigail was inducted into the National Junior Honor Society as a result of her academic excellence and leadership achievements. Her mother, Mrs. Monica Mora, is a 3rd grade teacher at Tippin Elementary and instilled in Abigail the importance of being an active participant in her community and giving back to others. During her free time, Abigail enjoys reading and playing tennis. She aspires to be a Physical Therapist or an Oncologist. The latter comes as a result of a life experience in which Abigail witnessed her uncle’s fight with cancer. This experience sparked her desire to help others who also have cancer and pursue a career in the medical profession. We are proud to make Abigail the co-recipient of the El Paso Star Young Leaders Award. Keep up the great work, Abigail!

Christopher Provencio, 8th Grade

“My parents, they always push me out of my comfort zone so that I can continue to grow as a person.”

Christopher Provencio

Christopher is 13 years old and is very involved in sports. He is an active member on the track and football teams, and also volunteers as a Soccer Sports Manager. As a Soccer Sports Manager, he helps ensure the team is prepared for their upcoming matches.  His mother, Mrs. Diana Provencio, is the Principal for Herrera Elementary School, and taught him the importance of community service. Last year Christopher was inducted into The National Junior Honor Society and consistently leads by example. He aspires to be an Ophthalmologist so he can continue to help others. We are proud to make Christopher the co-recipient of the El Paso Star Young Leaders Award.  Keep up the great work Christopher!

Isabella Fraire, 7th Grade

Isabella has been in the Gifted and Talented Program since the 5th grade and is a member of the National Junior Honor Society. At an early age she was influenced by her mathematics professor, Ms. Erica Ahunada, to understand the importance of community service. She volunteers regularly at Memorial Park following local events and is a member of the Harold Wiggs Volley Ball team. Isabella is an inspiration to her peers by showing them that hard work pays off and we are proud to make her our first El Paso Star co-recipient of the Young Leaders Award.

Cesar Romero, 7th Grade

Cesar was nominated as an Ambassador for Harold Wiggs Middle School due to his exemplary scholastic accomplishments and community awareness. Cesar helps with fundraisers and frequently volunteers for multiple school activities. In his spare time Cesar enjoys playing piano, Legos and is a member of the chess club. His sister and Labrador/Shepherd mix, Bear, are very special to him and he continues to raise awareness to serve and help others. We are proud to make him our first El Paso Star co-recipient of the Young Leaders Award.

Skylar Landerum, 8th Grade

“My family, my Dad is a Chief Warrant Officer and is deployed right now in Syria. Although far from home, he always manages to put a smile on our faces. My mom, has always put everyone before herself and my sister is in the US Air Force Academy and means a lot to me; I look up to her.”

Skylar Landerum

Skylar is in the 8 th Grade and was born in South Carolina. She is the daughter of a Mr. Jason and Mrs. Shayla Landerum, a Military family. She recently moved to El Paso from South Korea and has lived in many international countries, each providing a new cultural experience. She enjoys playing sports including soccer, basketball & volleyball. While in Korea, she learned the value of community service and would spend hours picking up trash around the base and working in community events. Locally, she walks her neighbor’s dogs and will be volunteering at the horse stables and the local animal shelters to help fuel her love for animals. She aspires to go to the U.S. Airforce Academy like her sister, to be an F22 Pilot and we are proud to name Skypar the co-recepient of The El Paso Star Youth Leadership Award. Keep up the great work Skylar and thank you Landerums and all our Military families for your service!

Nicholas Alexander, 7th Grade

“Every one of my teachers has inspired me to be more involved in the community and help the next generation.”

Nicholas Alexander

Nicholas is in the 7th grade and was born in Japan. He later moved to El Paso and enjoys the Arts. Nicholas is currently working on a drawing that will be displayed in the school’s Winter Dance Showcase. Nicholas was inducted into the National Junior honor Society for his academic achievements and was also recently invited to join the National Hispanic Institute for his exemplary leadership abilities. He finds inspiration by following in the footsteps of his older brother Matthew who is currently working on his Master’s Degree at UTEP. In the future Nicholas aspires to be a surgeon to help others and we are proud to make him the co-recipient of The El Paso Star Youth Leadership Award. Keep up the good work Nicholas!
